“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” – Ephesians 4:29
We have a couple of signs hanging in our church. The first one reads, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind”. The next one says, “Kind people are my kind of people”. Both of these signs would not find themselves in the average Independent Fundamental Baptist church.
When I was on staff at a larger church, a nationally known evangelist came to preach. For some reason he chose me to pick on, I guess because I was young and new on staff. Throughout the whole message the “preacher” decided to use me as a human punching bag. He pulled my shirt tail out, he messed up my hair, next he messed up my glasses and slapped me repeatedly in the stomach. I was humiliated… but it was all “in good fun”, right?
“So is the man that deceiveth his neighbor, and saith, Am not I in sport?” – Proverbs 26:19
I decided that night that if I ever became someone in leadership over a church, I would ALWAYS treat others with compassion and kindness. We have no idea what our Christian brothers and sisters are going through so let’s be kind one unto another!
For years, the Independent Baptists have been known for one thing… being judgmental and rude. Let’s do something different and be kind.
