Jesus did some pretty amazing things during his time here on earth. From healing the blind to raising people from the dead, Jesus was 100% man and 100% God at the same time! Although Jesus did some miraculous things, his sole purpose was always to seek and to save those who were lost! Now that he is no longer here to do the work himself, he is relying on us to continue where he left off (Great Commission).
During creation, God created two different lights
“And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.” – Genesis 1:16
The sun is the “greater light” which is symbolic of Jesus
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” – John 8:12
The sun is our primary source of light and is crucial for our survival! Without the sun, the earth would be in complete darkness. The same is true in a spiritual application, without the son (Jesus), our world would be in complete spiritual darkness! Jesus is the light of the world and without him, we would have no chance at life!
The moon is the “lesser light” which is symbolic of God’s people
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
The moon is also crucial in providing light to the world. Without the moon’s presence in the night sky, many places would be in total darkness. But it’s also important to realize that the moon does no produce its own light… it simply reflects the light given by the sun!
The moon can only put off light if it reflects the light of the sun. The same is true for us… on our own, we can’t provide any hope to this lost and dying world. Our value is solely based on our ability to be a reflection of Jesus Christ to those around us!
The best we can do no our own is filthy rags
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” – Isaiah 64:6
“It’s not about who you are… it’s about who you can show to others”
This principle can be applied to every area of our life… we should strive to model our lives after the example that Jesus left for us!
The sun has one primary purpose… to provide light in darkness! We (the moon) are left with the task of providing light to this dark world, but we can’t produce any light ourselves… we must reflect Jesus!
