What’s the point of going to church? That’s a good question! A question that you are likely to get a variety of answers from if you asked random people on the streets. Some believe that people go to church to help them feel better about their situation. Others think it’s needed to get to heaven. So, why should you really go to church?
First off, you should go because the Bible says you should go. “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25) We should never forsake the assembly of ourselves together, also known as the church.
But what’s the point of going to church? Well, to know that, we need to know what a church is. A church is an assembly of saved, baptized believers. So, you need to be saved and baptized in order to be a member of the local church. The church is for God’s children who have taken the first step of obedience and followed God’s command to be baptized. The church is a place to learn and grow as Christians.
Even among church membership, people have different reason for attending the services. Some go to church because that’s what their family has always done. Others go to church because they are looking for help in their daily lives. So, why do you go to church? What are you looking for? Every church is different, but as long as you are attending the right kind of church, there are some things you should always find.
Go to church for…
1) Fellowship – We are surrounded by the problems of this world just about every hour of the day. Bad influences are all around us, financial problems stress us out, even the news is depressing! But church is a place where you can come and fellowship with other like-minded believers who will encourage you and help you through your day. I Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” The church is a place of comfort and edification in this dark world. Godly fellowship is a great reason to go to church!
2) Conviction – This one is huge! Conviction is what drives the Christian to make big decisions in his/her life. There is a problem if you go to church every week and don’t get anything out of it. When you sit under the words of the preacher and never make a decision to change areas of your life. Church is a place where saved sinners meet to try and clean up their lives! Conviction is that feeling the Holy Spirit gives you when you need to make a change! He convicts you for salvation, baptism, bad music, bad friends, bad attitude toward parents, and so much more! Why go to church? Conviction! If you aren’t making decisions and pushing towards Christ, you aren’t getting the full church experience!
3) Service – The church is a great place for fellowship and conviction, but if you truly want to be blessed by God, you don’t stop there. God doesn’t just save us so we can go to heaven. He saves us so we can tell others about Him! There is no greater job on earth than that of a soul-winner! You may say, “I just don’t really feel a burden to go soul-winning.” Well, that’s okay! Going soul-winning is a command given by God through the Great Commission… “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28:19) You don’t have to feel burdened about a command, you just do it! Serving God is the great responsibility and a huge part of the local church!
Let’s make sure we are getting the full experience of the church. I have met several people who wonder why God doesn’t seem to be blessing their lives while they are going to church once a week. Well, God wants to bless you, but you are limiting what He can do! Don’t just go to one service each week … go to all of them! Don’t just show up on time for church and leave as soon as it’s over… enjoy the godly fellowship! Don’t just sit there during the preaching like a bump on a log… get something out of it and respond to the conviction! Don’t just enjoy the church services each week and go home… find a place of service in the church and go soul-winning!
Why go to church? Simply put… to get something out of it! God has it designed to help you in every way possible, but you can’t expect full blessings when you are only using part of what He offers. Enjoy godly fellowship, respond to convictions, and serve Him! That’s why you should go to church!
